Make Universities Great Again

Think freely. Debate fearlessly. Pursue truth.

Britain built some of the greatest universities on Earth.

They should be places where the brightest minds are challenged, difficult questions can be asked, competing ideas are tested and excellence and merit matter.

MUGA: Make Universities Great Again is a Great British PAC project bringing together academics, students, alumni, donors and leading public voices who believe in restoring academic excellence, free speech, open debate, merit, intellectual diversity and the pursuit of truth to British higher education.

Universities should teach students how to think, not what to think.

What MUGA stands for

  • Academic excellence and merit at the heart of appointments and opportunity.
  • Lawful freedom of speech, regardless of political viewpoint.
  • Academic freedom and protection for controversial research.
  • Genuine intellectual and viewpoint diversity.
  • Institutional neutrality rather than ideological conformity.
  • Protection of Britain’s historic university buildings, artworks, libraries and collections.
  • Transparent and accountable governance when serious institutional failures are alleged.

From principle to action

MUGA is not simply about talking. We want to build a national network capable of turning these principles into action through public campaigning, alumni engagement, donor support and prominent intellectual voices.

Our work will extend across Oxford and Cambridge, the Russell Group and outstanding universities throughout Britain.

Alumni have an especially important voice. Universities regularly seek support from former students. MUGA encourages alumni to ask serious questions about how their universities approach free speech, academic freedom, merit, intellectual diversity, heritage and governance.

Our first campaign is coming

Something exciting is already under way.

MUGA’s first major campaign will be announced in the next few weeks. It will put the principles at the heart of MUGA into action and mark the beginning of a much wider programme.

Help us build MUGA

To give MUGA national reach, we need alumni, academics, students, patrons, donors and public figures who want to be involved.

Are you an academic, a student, an alumnus or alumna, or would you like to talk about becoming a patron or making a larger gift? Tell us who you are and how you’d like to help.
