Sinn Féin says Burnham cannot stop break-up of UK after Cardiff self-determination pact

Andy Burnham is facing a co-ordinated nationalist challenge after Sinn Féin, the SNP and Plaid Cymru signed a pact in Cardiff declaring that Westminster has no right to block their nations’ “self-determination”. Michelle O’Neill said the Prime Minister would not be able to “hold back the tide”, while John Swinney claimed Burnham would be the last Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

200,000 families receive more from the state than the median full-time worker earns, Government confirms

Baroness Sherlock told the Lords that 200,000 families received more than £39,039 in state support in the financial year ending 2025, above the median full-time wage. The figure includes Universal Credit, tax credits, the state pension and PIP. The DWP spent £287.9bn on pensions and benefits last year, against £62bn for defence. And the published figures do not say who is receiving it.
