Green Tax to Hit British Farmers: Calls to Halt Fertiliser Levy as Drought Piles Pressure on Industry

Farmers face a doubling of fertiliser prices when Labour's net zero border tax arrives in January 2027, academic research suggests. With the worst harvest on record following a summer of drought, the NFU is demanding the Government postpone the carbon border adjustment mechanism, warning it will add up to £70 a tonne to fertiliser costs and push food prices higher for 29 million households. Critics say the levy, which mirrors measures imposed by the EU, raises fundamental questions about whether Brexit's promise of sovereignty is being quietly surrendered.
